On a coastal lot, plan the layout around the three things you can’t move: the water, the wind that comes off it and the door to the house. Put the grill downwind of where people sit, keep prep and storage close to the door and check overhead clearance before anything else. With Stono’s four standard islands running 77 to 140 inches in a straight line, the rest is a question of where the island sits and how long it is.
You need a general contractor only if your outdoor kitchen gets built on site. A pre-assembled kitchen doesn't need one: a homeowner can place, level and connect the sections, and licensed trades make the gas, electrical and water hookups. If a utility line runs to it, a licensed pro connects it, and everything else is placement.
In a prefabricated outdoor kitchen, look for how much was finished at the factory and how much the spec sheet will put in writing. The best ones arrive as finished sections and they name the frame’s alloy and gauge, the finish warranty in years, the stainless grade on each part and the warranty on the structure. If a manufacturer won’t put those answers in writing, the answer is no.
